Mileage Depreciation
Split a standard-mileage deduction into depreciation and non-depreciation components.
Description
A mileage allowance can contain a depreciation component.
A mileage allowance can contain a depreciation component. Multiplying each per-mile amount by business miles separates the total allowance from that component.1
Split a standard-mileage deduction into depreciation and non-depreciation components.
When to use Mileage Depreciation
Use this tool to split a standard-mileage deduction into depreciation and non-depreciation components.
Choose the specific arithmetic or checklist scenario and establish its input amounts, dates, rates and criteria from the applicable records. Keep currencies, periods and jurisdictions consistent; review the tool-specific assumptions before interpreting the result.
How to use Mileage Depreciation and understand its results
- Choose the specific arithmetic or checklist scenario and establish its input amounts, dates, rates and criteria from the applicable records. Keep currencies, periods and jurisdictions consistent; review the tool-specific assumptions before interpreting the result.
- Enter businessMiles, standardMileageRate, depreciationComponentRate using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read standardMileageDeduction, depreciationComponent, nonDepreciationComponent. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| businessMiles | Business miles (mi) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| standardMileageRate | Standard mileage rate (currency/mi) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| depreciationComponentRate | Included depreciation rate (currency/mi) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
Enter nonnegative business miles and rates in currency units per mile, not cents unless converted first. Calculate the standard allowance, depreciation component and their difference. Returned outputs must all be nonnegative; a negative difference is rejected by output validation.
deduction=miles×standardRate; depreciation=miles×depreciationRate; other=deduction−depreciation Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| standardMileageDeduction | Standard mileage deduction | number; minimum: 0 |
| depreciationComponent | Included depreciation component | number; minimum: 0 |
| nonDepreciationComponent | Non-depreciation component | number; minimum: 0 |
{
"input": {
"businessMiles": 1000,

"depreciationComponentRate": 0.3
},
"output": {
"standardMileageDeduction": 700,

} Limitations and assumptions
No statutory rate is embedded or vehicle eligibility checked. The input rules do not directly compare the two rates, but a depreciation rate greater than the standard rate causes an input-error result when positive miles produce a negative non-depreciation component.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
