Momme Weight Conversion Fabric

Convert measured swatch GSM to moisture-conditioned commercial momme: one pound per 45-inch by 100-yard silk piece, approximately 4.34 g/m² per momme; regain is dry-basis, not wet-basis water percent.

Description

GSM expresses fabric mass per square meter, while momme is a traditional silk weight unit.

GSM expresses fabric mass per square meter, while momme is a traditional silk weight unit. Conditioning adjusts dry mass to an agreed regain basis.

When to use Momme Weight Conversion Fabric

Use this tool to convert measured swatch GSM to moisture-conditioned commercial momme: one pound per 45-inch by 100-yard silk piece, approximately 4.34 g/m² per momme; regain is dry-basis, not wet-basis water percent.

Prepare cocoon, larval, leaf or reeling measurements on a consistent batch and moisture basis. Use the declared mass, length and time units.

How to use Momme Weight Conversion Fabric and understand its results

  1. Prepare cocoon, larval, leaf or reeling measurements on a consistent batch and moisture basis. Use the declared mass, length and time units.
  2. Enter swatchMassGrams, swatchWidthCm, swatchLengthCm, measuredMoistureRegainFraction, agreedMoistureRegainFraction using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read measuredFabricGsm, conditionedFabricGsm, conditionedMomme. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

swatchWidthCmSwatch width cmnumberRequired
swatchLengthCmSwatch length cmnumberRequired

Use positive swatch dimensions, nonnegative grams and dry-basis regain fractions. Convert cm² to m², condition the GSM and divide by 453.59237/(1.143 × 91.44), about 4.34 GSM per momme.1

conditioned GSM = measured GSM × (1 + agreed regain)/(1 + measured regain)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Regain is water/dry mass, not wet-basis moisture; the commercial unit convention does not establish a legal allowance.

Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Fabric GSM From Denier Ends: Estimate woven GSM from separate warp/weft denier, count and crimp with a caller finishing mass factor; excludes unmodeled dimensional shrinkage and nonwoven structure. For a complementary task, use Conditioned Weight International Formula: Estimate lot commercial conditioned weight using pooled sample dry/received ratios and an explicit agreed dry-basis regain; no jurisdiction-specific conditioning allowance is embedded.
