Random Symmetric Matrix Generator
Construct a square integer matrix by mirroring its upper triangle and report verified symmetry.
Description
Generate a square integer matrix by sampling the upper triangle and mirroring it across the main diagonal.
A real symmetric matrix equals its transpose: entries at row i, column j match those at row j, column i. This relationship allows an independent triangle to represent the matrix, although different storage formats may retain one triangle or the full square array.1
This generator returns a full square matrix, including its diagonal, and a symmetric flag checked by the symmetry tool. It samples one integer per upper-triangular position and copies off-diagonal entries to their mirror positions. Symmetry alone does not imply positive definiteness or invertibility.
When to use Random Symmetric Matrix Generator
Use it for matrix exercises or symmetry-check fixtures that need a generated square matrix within explicit integer bounds.
How to use Random Symmetric Matrix Generator and understand its results
- Enter integer size from 1 through 64 and safe-integer minimumValue and maximumValue with minimum no greater than maximum.
- Run the generator and read matrix as a row-major array and symmetric as the verification result.
- Use the full matrix in the intended exercise; check any additional property, such as determinant or positive definiteness, separately.
sample = minimum + floor(randomDraw × (maximum − minimum + 1)); A_ij = A_ji = sample for j ≥ i Both bounds are intended to be inclusive. The implementation consumes size × (size + 1)/2 random draws, then runs the symmetry checker.
Mirrored entries are dependent because they share a draw. Diagonal entries are sampled normally and are not fixed to zero. No sparsity pattern or spectral constraint is imposed.

Limitations and assumptions
The default source is Math.random; no seed input or cryptographic entropy guarantee is provided. Repeated runs may select the same result, and the distribution depends on the random source.
The tool does not ensure nonsingularity, positive definiteness, orthogonality, distinct entries, or a chosen eigenvalue distribution. The output is dense storage even when sampled values happen to include many zeros.
Very wide integer intervals can exceed exact floating-point resolution in the range-width arithmetic. Use moderate bounds when exact discrete sampling behavior matters.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use the symmetry checker for a matrix you already have. A transpose provides a direct comparison, while a sparse generator controls nonzero positions without guaranteeing symmetry.
