Random Sparse Matrix Generator

Generate a matrix with an exact number of unique nonzero positions and report its actual sparsity fraction.

Description

Generate a rectangular matrix with an exact number of distinct nonzero positions and report its zero fraction.

Sparse matrices contain many zero entries, making the location and values of nonzero entries important to their use and storage. Dedicated sparse formats may store only those entries; a full row array is a different representation.1

This generator returns a full matrix array with exactly the requested nonzeroCount. It chooses distinct cell positions, assigns signed nonzero integer magnitudes, and reports sparsity as the fraction of cells equal to zero. A sparsity of 0.8 means 80% zeros, not 80% nonzeros.

When to use Random Sparse Matrix Generator

Use it for matrix-density demonstrations or fixtures that require a specific number of nonzero entries rather than an expected density.

How to use Random Sparse Matrix Generator and understand its results

  1. Enter integer rows and columns from 1 through 64 and integer nonzeroCount from zero through rows × columns.
  2. Enter positive safe-integer minimumMagnitude and maximumMagnitude with minimum no greater than maximum, then run the generator.
  3. Read matrix, nonzeroCount, and sparsity. Keep the full-array storage representation in mind when passing it to software expecting a sparse format.
sparsity = 1 − nonzeroCount/(rows × columns)

Nonzero count is exact, rather than the outcome of an independent Bernoulli trial for every cell.

The implementation fills a zero matrix and creates a row-major position list. A partial Fisher–Yates shuffle selects distinct positions without replacement. For each position, it draws an integer magnitude in the inclusive entered range and independently draws a sign: below 0.5 is negative, otherwise positive.

Each nonzero placement consumes three draws: position, magnitude, and sign. The dimensions tool verifies the resulting array before the zero-fraction calculation. No symmetry or diagonal preference is imposed.

Count zero returns an all-zero matrix with sparsity one and consumes no random draws. Count rows × columns fills every cell and gives sparsity zero. Requesting too many nonzeros, a zero magnitude bound, or reversed bounds is rejected; invalid consumed draws also fail.

Limitations and assumptions

The default source is Math.random; no seed input or cryptographic entropy guarantee is provided. Repeated runs may select the same result, and the distribution depends on the random source.

The generator does not emit CSR, CSC, or coordinate storage, and does not impose rank, conditioning, symmetry, connectivity, or a graph interpretation. At high nonzero counts the output need not be sparse in the ordinary descriptive sense.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a symmetry generator when mirrored entries are required. A dimensions tool checks array shape independently before a matrix operation or format conversion.
