Random Polynomial Evaluation Exercise Generator

Generate bounded polynomial coefficients and evaluation points with Horner-evaluated answer values.

Description

Generate bounded integer polynomials and evaluation points with their calculated values.

A polynomial coefficient list identifies terms by position, from its highest power down to the constant term. Zeros must be retained for missing powers so that evaluation uses the intended exponents.1

Each item in result.exercises contains coefficients, x, and value. The generator ensures a nonzero leading coefficient, so the polynomial has the requested degree. value supplies the result of substitution rather than an automatically hidden answer.

When to use Random Polynomial Evaluation Exercise Generator

Use it for polynomial-substitution worksheets or coefficient-order fixtures with an included answer.

How to use Random Polynomial Evaluation Exercise Generator and understand its results

  1. Enter integer exerciseCount from 1 through 64, degree from 1 through 8, coefficientMagnitude from 1 through 100, and pointMagnitude from 1 through 20.
  2. Run and interpret coefficients in descending-power order; a degree-d polynomial has d + 1 entries.
  3. Evaluate the polynomial at the supplied x, then compare with value. Hide value separately for learner-facing questions.
coefficient = −M + floor(randomDraw × (2M + 1)); x = −P + floor(randomDraw × (2P + 1))

The implementation consumes degree + 1 coefficient draws and one evaluation-point draw per exercise.

Each coefficient is sampled in inclusive [−M, M]. If the first coefficient is zero, it is replaced with one, introducing a bias toward one rather than resampling uniformly among nonzero coefficients.

accumulator starts at 0; for each coefficient c: accumulator = accumulator × x + c

The polynomial evaluator uses Horner’s method on the descending-power list and returns the final accumulator as value.

Degree one gives two coefficients. x can be zero and internal or constant coefficients can be zero. Degree zero is not exposed. Noninteger parameter choices, out-of-range values, and invalid draws fail.

Limitations and assumptions

The default source is Math.random; no seed input or cryptographic entropy guarantee is provided. Repeated runs may select the same result, and the distribution depends on the random source.

The generator does not support symbolic coefficients, fractional or complex points, difficulty grading, or automatically concealed answers. Repeated exercises are allowed, and forced leading-coefficient correction makes the polynomial distribution nonuniform.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Evaluate a chosen polynomial using the deterministic calculator. Synthetic division can connect evaluation at a divisor root with the remainder theorem.
