Description

Address a supplied tooth/surface chart using explicit indexing conventions.

Dental research records distinguish teeth, surfaces, sites, observations, exclusions, and reporting bases. Measurement resolution and missing observations affect interpretation differently. A chart token, site share, or measurement envelope can check supplied data without establishing a clinical finding.

Address a supplied tooth/surface chart using explicit indexing conventions.

When to use this tool

Use Periodontal Chart Tooth Surface Index Term when you need this site-record, denominator, label, image-scale, or measurement component for supplied research data.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter toothIndex, surfaceIndex, surfacesPerTooth, origin. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read flatIndex, oneBasedIndex. Use the output convention below.

For nonnegative integer toothIndex and valid surfaceIndex below positive surfacesPerTooth, accept origin zero or one. Return flatIndex=toothIndex*surfacesPerTooth+surfaceIndex+origin and oneBasedIndex with an added one regardless of origin.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Tooth and surface indices are always zero-based inputs. No tooth ID lookup, anatomical surface ordering, or actual chart layout is inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Signed zero is exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the intended examination or measurement protocol with verified site identities and source records. Broader interpretation requires actual observations and appropriate measurement properties beyond one token or ratio.
