Think Aloud Code Tally

Tally think-aloud transcript categories and uncoded utterances.

Description

Think-aloud coding assigns prepared utterance labels to categories.

Think-aloud coding assigns prepared utterance labels to categories. A tally summarizes the supplied coding without interpreting transcript language.1

Tally think-aloud transcript categories and uncoded utterances.

When to use Think Aloud Code Tally

Use this tool to tally think-aloud transcript categories and uncoded utterances.

Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.

How to use Think Aloud Code Tally and understand its results

  1. Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
  2. Enter observedCodes, categoryCodes using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read categoryCounts, uncodedCount. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
observedCodesObserved codeslist of stringRequired
categoryCodesCategory codeslist of stringRequired

Enter a nonempty distinct exact category list and observed codes, which may be empty. Return category counts in declared order and count of labels not in the set.

count(category)=number of exact observed matches; uncoded=count(labels outside category set)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No trimming or case normalization occurs. Unknown labels are counted as uncoded; transcript content and coding reliability are not evaluated.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Running Record Miscue Tally: Tally coded running-record miscues and error rate for reading analysis. For a complementary task, use Discussion Rubric Score: Score asynchronous discussion criteria and flag low-scoring rubric dimensions.
