Seating Capacity Selector

Choose a feasible classroom seating layout by capacity and interaction priority.

Description

Classroom seating selection combines declared capacities with a simple preference order.

Classroom seating selection combines declared capacities with a simple preference order. Feasibility is checked before choosing a preferred layout.1

Choose a feasible classroom seating layout by capacity and interaction priority.

When to use Seating Capacity Selector

Use this tool to choose a feasible classroom seating layout by capacity and interaction priority.

Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.

How to use Seating Capacity Selector and understand its results

  1. Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
  2. Enter classSize, rowsCapacity, uCapacity, clustersCapacity, prioritizePeerDiscussion using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read feasibleLayouts, selectedLayout. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
classSizeClass sizenumberRequired
rowsCapacityRows capacitynumberRequired
uCapacityU capacitynumberRequired
clustersCapacityClusters capacitynumberRequired
prioritizePeerDiscussionPrioritize peer discussionbooleanRequired

Enter positive safe-integer class size, nonnegative whole-seat capacities and peer-discussion preference. Feasible layouts are listed rows/u/clusters. Select clusters/u/rows for discussion priority, otherwise rows/u/clusters; reject if none fits.

feasible if capacity≥classSize; choose first feasible in preference order

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Physical geometry, sightlines, access and teaching needs beyond the preference flag are not evaluated.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Breakout Group Planner: Partition participants into breakout rooms and calculate usable task time. For a complementary task, use Flexible Grouping Roster: Regroup learners by current assessment score into balanced contiguous skill bands.
