Flexible Grouping Roster
Regroup learners by current assessment score into balanced contiguous skill bands.
Description
Flexible grouping forms contiguous score bands with nearly equal group sizes.
Flexible grouping forms contiguous score bands with nearly equal group sizes. This produces similar-score groups rather than mixing high and low scores.1
Regroup learners by current assessment score into balanced contiguous skill bands.
When to use Flexible Grouping Roster
Use this tool to regroup learners by current assessment score into balanced contiguous skill bands.
Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
How to use Flexible Grouping Roster and understand its results
- Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
- Enter studentIds, assessmentScores, groupCount using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read groupAssignments, groupSizes. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| studentIds | Student ids | list of string | Required |
| assessmentScores | Assessment scores | list of number | Required |
| groupCount | Group count | number | Required |
Enter unique exact learners, aligned finite scores and safe-integer group count from one through roster size. Sort ascending score then localeCompare ID; partition consecutively, giving extra seats to earlier groups. Return comma-joined assignments and sizes.
sort by score then ID; size_g=floor(n/groups)+(g<n mod groups) Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |

| groupAssignments | Group assignments | list of string |
| groupSizes | Group sizes | list of number |

No student preferences, mixed-ability balancing or educational outcome is evaluated. Commas in IDs are not escaped.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
