Rubric Format Selector
Choose an analytic or holistic rubric from feedback needs and grading time.
Description
Analytic rubrics score separate criteria while holistic rubrics use an overall judgment.
Analytic rubrics score separate criteria while holistic rubrics use an overall judgment. This selector combines a diagnostic-feedback flag with estimated grading times.1
Choose an analytic or holistic rubric from feedback needs and grading time.
When to use Rubric Format Selector
Use this tool to choose an analytic or holistic rubric from feedback needs and grading time.
Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
How to use Rubric Format Selector and understand its results
- Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
- Enter criterionCount, minutesPerCriterion, holisticMinutes, maximumGradingMinutes, diagnosticFeedbackRequired using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read analyticMinutes, recommendedFormat, timeOverrunMinutes. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| criterionCount | Criterion count | number | Required |
| minutesPerCriterion | Minutes per criterion | number | Required |
| holisticMinutes | Holistic minutes | number | Required |
| maximumGradingMinutes | Maximum grading minutes | number | Required |
| diagnosticFeedbackRequired | Diagnostic feedback required | boolean | Required |
Enter positive safe-integer criterion count and positive times/budget. Prefer feasible analytic when diagnostics are required, then feasible holistic, then feasible analytic, otherwise insufficient-time. Return analytic time and its overrun.
analyticTime=criterionCount×minutesPerCriterion; select according to feedback need and time feasibility Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| analyticMinutes | Analytic minutes | number |
| recommendedFormat | Recommended format | string |
| timeOverrunMinutes | Time overrun minutes | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
A holistic result can occur despite requested diagnostics if analytic time is infeasible. The overrun always refers to analytic time, not the selected format. Rubric validity is not assessed.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Rubric Descriptor Matrix: Build a criterion-by-performance-level rubric from caller descriptors. For a complementary task, use Discussion Rubric Score: Score asynchronous discussion criteria and flag low-scoring rubric dimensions.
