Retrieval Practice Gate

Schedule the next retrieval test from observed recall and a mastery gate.

Description

A retrieval gate uses observed recall to choose between two supplied review gaps.

A retrieval gate uses observed recall to choose between two supplied review gaps. It schedules a next attempt without estimating the optimal spacing.1

Schedule the next retrieval test from observed recall and a mastery gate.

When to use Retrieval Practice Gate

Use this tool to schedule the next retrieval test from observed recall and a mastery gate.

Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.

How to use Retrieval Practice Gate and understand its results

  1. Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
  2. Enter correctRecall, attemptedRecall, passFraction, currentDay, successGapDays, retryGapDays using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read recallFraction, masteryGatePassed, nextRetrievalDay. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
correctRecallCorrect recallnumberRequired
attemptedRecallAttempted recallnumberRequired
passFractionPass fractionnumberRequired
currentDayCurrent daynumberRequired
successGapDaysSuccess gap daysnumberRequired
retryGapDaysRetry gap daysnumberRequired

Enter positive safe-integer attempts, correct count within them, threshold in 0–1, safe-integer current day and positive safe-integer gaps. Return recall fraction, inclusive pass flag and next day.

fraction=correct/attempted; next=currentDay+(fraction≥pass ? successGap : retryGap)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Content difficulty, retention duration and learning effectiveness are not modeled. The pass criterion and gaps are supplied.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Expanding Review Schedule: Generate expanding review intervals with caller-defined initial gap and growth. For a complementary task, use Completion Problem Transition: Gate a completion-problem fade by observed student success.
