Interleaved Practice Order

Build a round-robin interleaved topic practice sequence.

Description

Interleaved practice ordering alternates topics through repeated rounds.

Interleaved practice ordering alternates topics through repeated rounds. This implementation rotates round starts for three or more topics but keeps two-topic rounds fixed.1

Build a round-robin interleaved topic practice sequence.

When to use Interleaved Practice Order

Use this tool to build a round-robin interleaved topic practice sequence.

Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.

How to use Interleaved Practice Order and understand its results

  1. Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
  2. Enter topicIds, repetitionsPerTopic, startOffset using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read practiceOrder, sessionCount. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
topicIdsTopic idslist of stringRequired
repetitionsPerTopicRepetitions per topicnumberRequired
startOffsetStart offsetnumberRequired

Enter at least two distinct exact topic IDs, positive safe-integer repetition count and nonnegative safe-integer start offset. Return the generated sequence and total sessions.

topic at round r,slot j=ids[(j+(n=2?0:r)+startOffset) mod n]

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No mastery, difficulty or optimal schedule is derived. Three-topic or larger rotations can repeat a topic across round boundaries. Keep repetition counts bounded because output grows as topics times repetitions.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Spiral Review Intervals: Map successive curriculum revisits from caller-chosen spacing intervals. For a complementary task, use Expanding Review Schedule: Generate expanding review intervals with caller-defined initial gap and growth.
