Gradual Release Phase Tracker

Track modeling, guided practice, and independent work in gradual release.

Description

Gradual-release tracking compares independent-work time with a selected fraction while requiring some modeling and guidance.

Gradual-release tracking compares independent-work time with a selected fraction while requiring some modeling and guidance. The flag describes this time-allocation rule.1

Track modeling, guided practice, and independent work in gradual release.

When to use Gradual Release Phase Tracker

Use this tool to track modeling, guided practice, and independent work in gradual release.

Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.

How to use Gradual Release Phase Tracker and understand its results

  1. Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
  2. Enter modelMinutes, guidedMinutes, independentMinutes, minimumIndependentFraction using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read totalMinutes, independentFraction, releaseReady. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

modelMinutesModel minutesnumberRequired
guidedMinutesGuided minutesnumberRequired
independentMinutesIndependent minutesnumberRequired
minimumIndependentFractionMinimum independent fractionnumberRequired

Enter nonnegative phase minutes with positive total and threshold in 0–1. Return total, independent fraction and combined flag.

independentFraction=independent/total; ready=model>0 AND guided>0 AND fraction≥minimum

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

A zero independent duration can pass with a zero threshold if the other phases exist. Learner readiness and actual instructional quality are not measured.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Workshop Time Allocation: Allocate a workshop period to mini-lesson, independent work, and share. For a complementary task, use Completion Problem Transition: Gate a completion-problem fade by observed student success.
