Gamification Risk Screen

Screen gamification design for caller-defined extrinsic-incentive risk flags.

Description

A gamification screen counts three design indicators for review of external incentives.

A gamification screen counts three design indicators for review of external incentives. The count is a heuristic rather than a measurement of student motivation.1

Screen gamification design for caller-defined extrinsic-incentive risk flags.

When to use Gamification Risk Screen

Use this tool to screen gamification design for caller-defined extrinsic-incentive risk flags.

Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.

How to use Gamification Risk Screen and understand its results

  1. Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
  2. Enter badgeCount, leaderboardEnabled, publicRankings, studentChoiceEnabled, maximumExternalIncentiveFlags using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read externalIncentiveFlags, intrinsicMotivationRisk. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
badgeCountBadge countnumberRequired
leaderboardEnabledLeaderboard enabledbooleanRequired
publicRankingsPublic rankingsbooleanRequired
studentChoiceEnabledStudent choice enabledbooleanRequired
maximumExternalIncentiveFlagsMaximum external incentive flagsnumberRequired

Enter nonnegative safe-integer badge count and maximum flags with the three design booleans. Return score from zero through three and strict risk flag. Any positive badge count contributes only one point.

flags=(badgeCount>0)+(leaderboard AND publicRankings)+(NOT studentChoice); risk=flags>maximum

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Indicators have equal weight. The screen does not inspect implementation, learner responses or establish a causal motivation effect.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Desirable Difficulty Calibration: Calibrate practice difficulty from observed recall and caller target band. For a complementary task, use Behavior Praise Ratio: Audit behavior-specific praise against a caller-defined praise/correction target.
