Cloze Passage Generator
Generate a cloze passage by deleting every Nth word while preserving punctuation.
Description
A cloze passage replaces periodically selected words with blanks while retaining surrounding punctuation.
A cloze passage replaces periodically selected words with blanks while retaining surrounding punctuation. Word tokenization determines the counted ordinals.1

When to use Cloze Passage Generator
Use this tool to generate a cloze passage by deleting every Nth word while preserving punctuation.
Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
How to use Cloze Passage Generator and understand its results
- Prepare the lesson timeline, roster, observations or assessment labels requested. Use consistent units and exact identifiers, then choose comparison criteria appropriate to the activity.
- Enter passage, deleteEveryNthWord, firstDeletionOrdinal using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read clozePassage, deletedWords. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| passage | Passage | string | Required |
| deleteEveryNthWord | Delete every nth word | number | Required |
| firstDeletionOrdinal | First deletion ordinal | number | Required |
Enter passage, positive safe-integer interval and first deletion ordinal from one through that interval. Recognize Unicode letter/number runs with internal straight/curly apostrophes or hyphens; replace chosen words with four underscores and return originals in order. Require at least one recognized word.
delete word ordinal k when k≥first AND (k−first) mod interval=0 Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| clozePassage | Cloze passage | string |
| deletedWords | Deleted words | list of string |
{
"input": {
"passage": "One two three four five six.",
"deleteEveryNthWord": 3,
"firstDeletionOrdinal": 3
},
"output": {
"clozePassage": "One two ____ four five ____.",
"deletedWords": [

}
} Limitations and assumptions
No semantic selection or difficulty assessment is performed. Tokenization may differ from a language-specific word segmenter.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Extremely large text inputs are rejected. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
