Description

Disjoint specimen-volume ledger, with no inference about sampling adequacy or specimen handling.

Laboratory records distinguish specimen identity, sampling coverage, retained quantities, processing times, image scale, and measurement uncertainty. Areas, volumes, counts, and source-support flags measure different aspects of a record. A local calculation does not identify tissue or establish diagnostic adequacy.

Disjoint specimen-volume ledger, with no inference about sampling adequacy or specimen handling.

When to use this tool

Use Pathology Aliquot Retained Volume Gap when you need this specimen-record, sampling, processing-time, dimensional, or uncertainty calculation.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter receivedVolume, aliquotedVolume, consumedVolume, discardedVolume, recordedRetained. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read expectedRetained, recordGap. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative receivedVolume, aliquotedVolume, consumedVolume, discardedVolume, and recordedRetained, with the three outgoing volumes summing no higher than receivedVolume. Return expectedRetained=received-outgoing and recordGap=recordedRetained-expectedRetained.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use one volume unit and distinct outgoing categories. Recorded retained volume is not capped by receipt, so discrepancies are retained; no specimen tracking, evaporation, or clinical adequacy is verified.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Signed zero is exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use validated laboratory procedures, traceable measurements, and authenticated specimen records for a complete assessment. Check the relevant sampling and processing assumptions before interpreting a local quantity.
