Description
Convert a supplied orthodontic wire diameter between millimetres and inches.
Dental model coordinates depend on scale, reference midlines, laterality and unit conventions. A wire diameter conversion differs from selecting a wire or estimating force, and a planar point distance differs from a complete arch measurement. Appliance labels and local geometry do not choose treatment stages or establish clinically suitable adjustments.

When to use this tool
Use Orthodontic Wire Diameter Unit when you already have diameter, inputUnit and need to convert a supplied orthodontic wire diameter between millimetres and inches.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter diameter, inputUnit. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read millimeters, inches. Use the output convention below.
Require diameter>=0 and inputUnit mm or in; use exactly 25.4 mm per inch.1
The international inch is exactly 25.4 millimetres. This diameter conversion does not select a wire or establish its mechanical behavior.2
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| diameter | Diameter | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| inputUnit | Exactly mm or in; one inch is 25.4 mm. | Required. Text; one of "mm", "in"; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| millimeters | Millimeters | Required. Finite number. |
| inches | Inches | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- No wire material, cross-sectional shape, suitable size or orthodontic force is selected.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use calibrated dental models and the original coordinate, midline and appliance-plan definitions for a full geometric review. Keep simple unit changes and local offsets separate from choosing a wire, stage, force or treatment adjustment.
