TS Diagram Water Mass Classifier

Screen TS samples against caller rectangular water-mass bands, preserving overlaps and unmatched states; no geographic water-mass reference database or forced single identity.

Description

Temperature-salinity rectangles can screen water-mass compatibility.

Temperature-salinity rectangles can screen water-mass compatibility. Overlapping rectangles permit multiple possible memberships.

When to use TS Diagram Water Mass Classifier

Use this tool to screen TS samples against caller rectangular water-mass bands, preserving overlaps and unmatched states; no geographic water-mass reference database or forced single identity.

Gather the water, wave, current or profile observations and any supplied calibration constants. Confirm units and the stated coordinate and pressure conventions.

How to use TS Diagram Water Mass Classifier and understand its results

  1. Gather the water, wave, current or profile observations and any supplied calibration constants. Confirm units and the stated coordinate and pressure conventions.
  2. Enter sampleTemperaturesC, sampleSalinities, waterMassBounds using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read membershipFlags, matchCounts. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

Align Celsius temperatures and nonnegative salinities, at most 128 samples, with ordered [Tmin,Tmax,Smin,Smax] rectangles. Return numeric membership matrix and matches per sample; endpoints qualify and unmatched samples return zero counts.1

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

membership = Tmin ≤ temperature ≤ Tmax AND Smin ≤ salinity ≤ Smax

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No geographic water-mass database or forced identity is supplied.

Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Matrices are limited to 128 rows and 128 entries per row; other numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Seawater Density TSP: Compute UNESCO EOS-80 seawater density for 0–40 °C IPTS-68, practical salinity 0–42 and gauge pressure 0–10000 dbar; not TEOS-10 or potential density. For a complementary task, use Mixed Layer Depth Density Criterion: Locate the first density-increase crossing below an interpolated reference depth; deeper inversions do not change the first crossing, and absent crossings are not replaced by profile bottom.
