Seawater Density TSP

Compute UNESCO EOS-80 seawater density for 0–40 °C IPTS-68, practical salinity 0–42 and gauge pressure 0–10000 dbar; not TEOS-10 or potential density.

Description

Seawater density depends on temperature, salinity and pressure under a chosen equation of state.

Seawater density depends on temperature, salinity and pressure under a chosen equation of state. EOS-80 uses practical salinity and IPTS-68 temperature.1

Compute UNESCO EOS-80 seawater density for 0–40 °C IPTS-68, practical salinity 0–42 and gauge pressure 0–10000 dbar; not TEOS-10 or potential density.

When to use Seawater Density TSP

Use this tool to compute UNESCO EOS-80 seawater density for 0–40 °C IPTS-68, practical salinity 0–42 and gauge pressure 0–10000 dbar; not TEOS-10 or potential density.

Gather the water, wave, current or profile observations and any supplied calibration constants. Confirm units and the stated coordinate and pressure conventions.

How to use Seawater Density TSP and understand its results

  1. Gather the water, wave, current or profile observations and any supplied calibration constants. Confirm units and the stated coordinate and pressure conventions.
  2. Enter temperatureIpts68C, practicalSalinity, pressureDbar using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read densityKgPerM3. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

Supply IPTS-68 temperature in [0,40] °C, practical salinity in [0,42] and gauge pressure in [0,10000] dbar. Evaluate the UNESCO polynomial and compressibility correction to return kg/m³.2

density = EOS-80 surface-density polynomial with pressure-dependent bulk-modulus correction

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

This is in-situ EOS-80 density, not TEOS-10, Absolute Salinity or potential density.

Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Subsurface Float Parking Pressure: Integrate layer-varying hydrostatic density into float parking pressure profiles, separating gauge dbar from absolute Pa; does not infer a neutral-buoyancy depth or use homogeneous pressure/depth division. For a complementary task, use Thermal Expansion Alpha Seawater: Estimate signed thermal expansion from measured density-temperature brackets at fixed salinity/pressure; not a reference-property lookup or a universal seawater coefficient.

Further background: Seawater equation-of-state and salinity conventions.
