Description
Compare supplied bench sound-pressure levels without estimating wearer protection.
Occupational exposure calculations combine measured quantities, duration, reference conditions, weighting, and sampling support. Linear concentrations, squared acceleration, and logarithmic sound levels require different arithmetic. A supplied reference or limit is not automatically the applicable standard, and a local calculation is separate from a full exposure and safety assessment.
Compare supplied bench sound-pressure levels without estimating wearer protection.
When to use this tool
Use Hearing Protector Bench Level Gap when you need this particular sampling, duration, reference-unit, physical-exposure, or reporting-base term.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter unprotectedDb, protectedDb, referencePressure. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read insertionLossDb, pressureRatio, protectedPressure. Use the output convention below.
For positive referencePressure return insertionLossDb=unprotectedDb-protectedDb, pressureRatio=10^(insertionLossDb/20), and protectedPressure=referencePressure*10^(protectedDb/20).1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| unprotectedDb | Unprotected Db | Required. Finite number. |
| protectedDb | Protected Db | Required. Finite number. |
| referencePressure | Positive pressure corresponding to zero dB on the supplied SPL scale. | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| insertionLossDb | Insertion Loss Db | Required. Finite number. |
| pressureRatio | Pressure Ratio | Required. Finite number. |
| protectedPressure | Protected Pressure | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Levels must be compatible sound-pressure levels using the supplied pressure reference. This is a bench-level ratio calculation, not an in-ear attenuation test, certified protection rating, complete noise assessment, or assurance of safe exposure.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use a complete hazard-specific assessment with calibrated measurements and the appropriate exposure model. Verify reference conditions, sampling coverage, weighting, denominator, and the applicable professional or regulatory method.
