Subsidence Trough Width

Estimate geometric influence envelope from panel width, depth and caller angle from vertical; does not infer geology or Gaussian trough scale.

Description

A geometric influence angle extends a subsidence footprint beyond each panel edge.

A geometric influence angle extends a subsidence footprint beyond each panel edge. Measuring the angle from vertical determines the tangent relation.

The tool returns influenceRadiusM (influence radius m); geometricTroughWidthM (geometric trough width m). Input measurements and model parameters are supplied by the caller; the tool computes the stated summary rather than acquiring those measurements.

When to use Subsidence Trough Width

Use Subsidence Trough Width when you already have coverDepthM, influenceAngleFromVerticalDegrees, panelWidthM and want influenceRadiusM, geometricTroughWidthM. This is useful for checking a supplied calculation, documenting a measurement convention, or comparing observations prepared on the same basis.

How to use Subsidence Trough Width and understand its results

  1. Enter coverDepthM, influenceAngleFromVerticalDegrees, panelWidthM using the field table below. Match the units, ordering and data boundaries described in the calculation.
  2. Run the tool after checking the stated bounds and matching paired observations or categories. A malformed request gives a tool error rather than a usable measurement.
  3. Read influenceRadiusM, geometricTroughWidthM. Use the calculation and interpretation below to distinguish amounts, ratios, signs and decision flags where applicable.
  4. Review the supplied parameters and assumptions before using the result in a report or comparing it with another observation.
Input fieldMeaningValue type and boundsRequirement
coverDepthMCover depth mnumberRequired

panelWidthMPanel width mnumberRequired

Use positive depth, nonnegative width and an angle in [0,90) degrees.

influenceRadius = coverDepth×tan(angleFromVertical); troughWidth = panelWidth+2×radius

The symbols refer to the supplied quantities or generated values described above; unit conversions and comparison boundaries follow the stated implementation.

Limitations and assumptions

This geometric footprint is not a fitted Gaussian trough scale or a predicted damage boundary. Geological calibration is external.

Numerical inputs must be finite. The tool checks its declared input shape and calculation constraints; those checks do not verify the quality, calibration or representativeness of the supplied observations.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Subsidence Tilt: Evaluate spatial derivative of supplied downward-positive Gaussian trough; distinct from horizontal strain and excludes building response. Maximum Subsidence: Apply calibrated extraction, subsidence and finite-panel factors to seam thickness; no empirical table or settlement guarantee.
