Manuscript Catchword Position Tool

Locate a supplied catchword line within one leaf; the leaf number is preserved as input context.

Description

Validate a positive leaf, positive linesOnLeaf, and line within the selected zero- or one-based range.

Manuscript and inscription tokens depend on editorial conventions for folios, sides, lacunae, and date labels. Parsing a convention preserves structure without interpreting the source text.

Validate a positive leaf, positive linesOnLeaf, and line within the selected zero- or one-based range.

When to use this tool

Use Manuscript Catchword Position when you need a caller-defined manuscript notation or layout check.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter leaf, line, linesOnLeaf, origin. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read distanceFromFinalLine, finalLine. Inspect finalLine before interpreting the associated values.

Validate a positive leaf, positive linesOnLeaf, and line within the selected zero- or one-based range. Subtract line from the final line coordinate and return whether it is final.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The leaf number does not affect the distance; actual catchword presence and manuscript layout are not checked.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the edition's transcription and foliation policy and inspect the source image for textual interpretation.
