Manuscript Catchword Line Budget Tool

Calculate manuscript catchword line budget from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Add bodyUnits, catchwordUnits, and separationUnits for required.

Manuscript and inscription tokens depend on editorial conventions for folios, sides, lacunae, and date labels. Parsing a convention preserves structure without interpreting the source text.

Add bodyUnits, catchwordUnits, and separationUnits for required.

When to use this tool

Use Manuscript Catchword Line Budget when you need a caller-defined manuscript notation or layout check.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter lineCapacity, bodyUnits, catchwordUnits, separationUnits. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read required, remaining, fits. Inspect fits before interpreting the associated values.

Add bodyUnits, catchwordUnits, and separationUnits for required. Subtract that total from lineCapacity and report fits inclusively.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Units must describe the same layout measure; negative remaining is diagnostic, and typography or script shaping is not measured.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the edition's transcription and foliation policy and inspect the source image for textual interpretation.
