Description
Require lower ≤ upper and positive referenceSpan, then divide interval width by referenceSpan.
Normalizing a metric divides by a declared reference scale or changes it according to its dimensional exponent. Different scales can produce different comparisons from identical errors.
Require lower ≤ upper and positive referenceSpan, then divide interval width by referenceSpan.
When to use this tool
Use Interval Width Reference Normalization when you need a transparent reference-scale calculation.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter lower, upper, referenceSpan. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read normalizedWidth. Use the output convention below.
Require lower ≤ upper and positive referenceSpan, then divide interval width by referenceSpan.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| lower | Lower | Required. Finite number. |
| upper | Upper | Required. Finite number. |
| referenceSpan | Reference Span | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| normalizedWidth | Normalized Width | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- All lengths must share a unit; the reference span is supplied and the ratio does not measure interval coverage.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Report the chosen scale and reference set alongside the original metric, especially when scales are near zero.
