Absolute Error Rounding Uncertainty Envelope Tool

Compute absolute error rounding uncertainty envelope from explicit bounded inputs.

Description

Add nonnegative actualHalfwidth and predictedHalfwidth to h.

An interval forecast has both a width and a relationship to an observed value. Scoring rules can penalize narrow misses while boundary conventions determine coverage separately.

Add nonnegative actualHalfwidth and predictedHalfwidth to h.

When to use this tool

Use Absolute Error Rounding Uncertainty Envelope when you need one interval width, coverage, penalty, or error-envelope term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter actual, predicted, actualHalfwidth, predictedHalfwidth. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read minimum, maximum. Use the output convention below.

Add nonnegative actualHalfwidth and predictedHalfwidth to h. For center difference d = abs(predicted - actual), return max(0, d - h) and d + h.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is an interval envelope under independently variable bounds, not a probabilistic confidence interval or correlation model.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Aggregate scores over comparable observations and examine empirical coverage and interval width together.
