Isopleth Interpolation IDW Stations Tool

Bounded planar IDW actual station values, exact collocated matches/conflicts preserved and stable scaled weights; no geodesy distance or physical isopleth guarantee. Caller independently establishes matching units, evidence, method edition and applicability; output is not compliance, diagnosis, work-safety approval, geological identity or validated hazard prediction.

Description

Inverse-distance weighting estimates a value from nearby stations by giving greater weight to shorter planar distances.

Inverse-distance weighting estimates a value from nearby stations by giving greater weight to shorter planar distances.1

The coordinate system, distance power and station representativeness determine the meaning of that estimate.

When to use Isopleth Interpolation IDW Stations Tool

Use this tool to calculate or review the supplied observations under the stated rules. Establish the observation method, units, averaging period and applicable reference or calibration.

How to use Isopleth Interpolation IDW Stations Tool and understand its results

  1. Establish the observation method, units, averaging period and applicable reference or calibration.
  2. Enter stationPlanarCoordinates, stationValues, queryX, queryY, callerDistancePower, using the field meanings and rules below, then run the tool.
  3. Read idwInterpolatedValue, normalizedStationWeights, using the output meanings and calculation rules below.
  4. Correct any reported input issue and run again. Before using a successful result, check the stated units, signs, reference scope and observation coverage.

Require nonempty aligned station values and two-column planar coordinates, with distance power in (0,8]. Calculate Euclidean distance to the query. Exact coincident stations must agree in value; if they do, split weight equally among them and give others zero. Otherwise form stable relative weights (minimumDistance/distance)^power, normalize their sum, and return the weighted value and station weights in original order.

w_i=(d_min/d_i)^p/Σ_j(d_min/d_j)^p; estimate=Σ_i w_i value_i; exact-hit branch averages equal coincident values

Use the matching field units and the exact boundary, ordering and reference rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Distances must be in one applicable planar coordinate system. There is no spherical projection, uncertainty estimate, terrain model or automatic contour generation.

Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types and violated rules return input issues. Numeric values and outputs must be finite. Lists and matrices must be dense, without missing cells. Numeric lists allow at most 10000 entries; ordinary string lists allow at most 128 strings of 128 UTF-16 units each; numeric matrices allow at most 128 rows and 128 columns, subject to narrower requirements above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

For a related step, use Hail Size Parameter Lookup: A hail diagnostic reference curve relates a measured diagnostic coordinate to a matched response. For a complementary comparison, use Climate Normals Anomaly Deviation Calculator: A climate anomaly is the difference between an observation and a matched normal.
