Hail Size Parameter Lookup

Hail parameter/size conditional same-region independently verified observed calibration, not CAPE-only deterministic hail size prediction. Conditional independently matched piecewise-linear calibration, no extrapolation. Caller independently establishes matching units, evidence, method edition and applicability; output is not compliance, diagnosis, work-safety approval, geological identity or validated hazard prediction.

Description

A hail diagnostic reference curve relates a measured diagnostic coordinate to a matched response.

A hail diagnostic reference curve relates a measured diagnostic coordinate to a matched response.1

Interpolation depends on the supplied calibration and does not identify hail from raw imagery. The tool interpolates your supplied reference curve and returns the local slope without extrapolation.

When to use Hail Size Parameter Lookup

Use this tool to calculate or review the supplied observations under the stated rules. Establish the observation method, units, averaging period and applicable reference or calibration.

How to use Hail Size Parameter Lookup and understand its results

  1. Establish the observation method, units, averaging period and applicable reference or calibration.
  2. Enter observedObservedHailDiagnosticCoordinates, callerMatchedObservedHailDiagnosticResponses, queryObservedHailDiagnosticCoordinate, using the field meanings and rules below, then run the tool.
  3. Read interpolatedResponse, localObservedSlope, using the output meanings and calculation rules below.
  4. Correct any reported input issue and run again. Before using a successful result, check the stated units, signs, reference scope and observation coverage.

callerMatchedObservedHailDiagnosticResponsesCaller matched observed hail diagnostic responseslist of numberRequired
queryObservedHailDiagnosticCoordinateQuery observed hail diagnostic coordinate; use the exact reference token or coordinate domain stated belownumberRequired

The curve helper requires at least two aligned samples with coordinates strictly increasing and the query inside their closed range. Interpolate linearly between neighboring samples. At an exact interior knot use that value and the right-hand segment slope; at the last knot use the final left-hand segment. Queries outside the range fail.

value=y_i+(query−x_i)(y_(i+1)−y_i)/(x_(i+1)−x_i); slope=(y_(i+1)−y_i)/(x_(i+1)−x_i)

Use the matching field units and the exact boundary, ordering and reference rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

The observations and reference conditions must be independently established. This result does not supply missing measurements, uncertainty or an official warning. Interpolation does not support extrapolation or replace a protocol-specific physical model.

Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types and violated rules return input issues. Numeric values and outputs must be finite. Lists and matrices must be dense, without missing cells. Numeric lists allow at most 10000 entries; ordinary string lists allow at most 128 strings of 128 UTF-16 units each; numeric matrices allow at most 128 rows and 128 columns, subject to narrower requirements above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

For a related step, use Riming Degree Graupel Hail Split Checker: Riming describes the accretion of supercooled droplets on ice particles, so distinguishing graupel and hail requires evidence about particles and growth. For a complementary comparison, use Isopleth Interpolation IDW Stations Tool: Inverse-distance weighting estimates a value from nearby stations by giving greater weight to shorter planar distances.
