OPLS Component Variance

Partition caller-provided OPLS predictive and orthogonal variance.

Description

OPLS variance summaries separate predictive, orthogonal and residual components supplied by an upstream model.

OPLS variance summaries separate predictive, orthogonal and residual components supplied by an upstream model. The two percentages use different denominators.1

Partition caller-provided OPLS predictive and orthogonal variance.

When to use OPLS Component Variance

Use this tool to partition caller-provided OPLS predictive and orthogonal variance.

Prepare the measured profile, formula counts, upstream model outputs or caller-defined reference criteria requested. Keep paired entries aligned and units, sample basis and preprocessing consistent.

How to use OPLS Component Variance and understand its results

  1. Prepare the measured profile, formula counts, upstream model outputs or caller-defined reference criteria requested. Keep paired entries aligned and units, sample basis and preprocessing consistent.
  2. Enter predictiveVariance, orthogonalVariance, residualVariance using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read explainedPercent, predictiveShareOfExplainedPercent. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
predictiveVariancePredictive variancenumberRequired
orthogonalVarianceOrthogonal variancenumberRequired
residualVarianceResidual variancenumberRequired

Enter nonnegative component variances with positive total and positive explained sum. Return explained fraction of total and predictive fraction of explained variance.

explained%=100(P+O)/(P+O+R); predictive%=100P/(P+O)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

explainedPercentExplained percentnumber
predictiveShareOfExplainedPercentPredictive share of explained percentnumber

Limitations and assumptions

No OPLS model, component extraction, validation or significance test is performed.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use VIP Threshold Gate: Gate variable-importance scores against a supplied VIP minimum. For a complementary task, use Q Residual Gate: Flag samples exceeding a caller-selected Q-residual model-fit limit.
