Freezing Point Osmolality

Estimate osmolality by a caller-calibrated freezing-point depression.

Description

Freezing-point depression estimates dissolved-particle osmolality through a supplied calibration coefficient.

Freezing-point depression estimates dissolved-particle osmolality through a supplied calibration coefficient. Multiplication by 1000 converts the osmol-per-kilogram basis to milliosmol per kilogram.1

Estimate osmolality by a caller-calibrated freezing-point depression.

When to use Freezing Point Osmolality

Use this tool to estimate osmolality by a caller-calibrated freezing-point depression.

Prepare the measured profile, formula counts, upstream model outputs or caller-defined reference criteria requested. Keep paired entries aligned and units, sample basis and preprocessing consistent.

How to use Freezing Point Osmolality and understand its results

  1. Prepare the measured profile, formula counts, upstream model outputs or caller-defined reference criteria requested. Keep paired entries aligned and units, sample basis and preprocessing consistent.
  2. Enter freezingPointDepressionC, referenceDepressionPerOsmolC using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read osmolalityMmolKg. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

referenceDepressionPerOsmolCReference depression per osmol cnumberRequired

Enter nonnegative depression and positive reference coefficient. Return the scaled osmolality.

osmolality=1000 depressionC/referenceDepressionPerOsmolC

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

The output field is named osmolalityMmolKg, but the particle-osmolality interpretation is mOsm/kg. No instrument calibration, solute identity or nonideal-solution correction is provided.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Urine Specific Gravity Correction: Correct urine concentration to a caller-selected specific-gravity reference. For a complementary task, use Creatinine Normalized Excretion: Normalize urinary metabolite concentration to creatinine.
