Cell Normalized OCR

Normalize oxygen consumption to a caller-selected cell count.

Description

Cell-normalized OCR scales an oxygen-consumption rate to a selected cell-count basis.

Cell-normalized OCR scales an oxygen-consumption rate to a selected cell-count basis. Count and normalization basis must describe the same population convention.1

Normalize oxygen consumption to a caller-selected cell count.

When to use Cell Normalized OCR

Use this tool to normalize oxygen consumption to a caller-selected cell count.

Prepare the measured profile, formula counts, upstream model outputs or caller-defined reference criteria requested. Keep paired entries aligned and units, sample basis and preprocessing consistent.

How to use Cell Normalized OCR and understand its results

  1. Prepare the measured profile, formula counts, upstream model outputs or caller-defined reference criteria requested. Keep paired entries aligned and units, sample basis and preprocessing consistent.
  2. Enter totalOcrPmolPerMinute, cellCount, normalizationCells using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read ocrPerNormalizedCells. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
totalOcrPmolPerMinuteTotal ocr pmol per minutenumberRequired

normalizationCellsNormalization cellsnumberRequired

Enter nonnegative OCR and positive cell count and normalization count. Fractional counts are accepted. Return scaled rate.

normalizedOCR=totalOCR/cellCount×normalizationCellCount

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Cell counting, viability, background subtraction and physiological interpretation are upstream tasks.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Spare Respiratory Capacity: Measure spare respiratory capacity relative to corrected basal OCR. For a complementary task, use ATP Coupling Efficiency: Calculate ATP-linked oxygen consumption and mitochondrial coupling efficiency.
