Project Buffer Task Share Tool

Distinguish a project buffer's share of combined scheduled time from its ratio to task time.

Description

Return buffer/(buffer+task) as bufferShareOfCombined and buffer/task as bufferToTaskRatio.

Capacity accounting compares available supply with commitments, reservations, or demand. Negative residuals can expose overload while zero capacity requires a distinct undefined utilization state.

Return buffer/(buffer+task) as bufferShareOfCombined and buffer/task as bufferToTaskRatio.

When to use this tool

Use Project Buffer Task Share when you need a transparent resource or workload capacity term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter bufferHours, taskHours. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read bufferShareOfCombined, bufferToTaskRatio. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative bufferHours and positive taskHours. Return buffer/(buffer+task) as bufferShareOfCombined and buffer/task as bufferToTaskRatio.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input

taskHoursTask HoursRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.

bufferShareOfCombinedBuffer Share Of CombinedRequired. Finite number.
bufferToTaskRatioBuffer To Task RatioRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • The two fractions have different denominators; this does not choose an appropriate schedule contingency or completion confidence.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Validate calendars, skill constraints, and concurrent demand with the actual resource plan.
