Serial Pagination Article Span Count Tool

Calculate serial pagination article span count from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Count the inclusive page span lastPage - firstPage + 1 and subtract excludedPages, bounded by that span.

Inclusive labels, repeated records, and serial restarts describe different counting bases. A numeric span is not automatically the count of existing physical or bibliographic items.

Count the inclusive page span lastPage - firstPage + 1 and subtract excludedPages, bounded by that span.

When to use this tool

Use Serial Pagination Article Span Count when you need a catalog count under a declared endpoint or restart convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter firstPage, lastPage, excludedPages. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read inclusiveSpan, countedPages. Use the output convention below.

Count the inclusive page span lastPage - firstPage + 1 and subtract excludedPages, bounded by that span.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This counts supplied integer page labels, not unnumbered plates, repeated pages, or actual article contents.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Compare the computed count with the original serial or item record, including missing and unnumbered material.
