Serial Issue Range Count Tool

Count issue positions in an inclusive numeric progression; do not infer combined or missing issues.

Description

Divide lastIssue minus firstIssue by positive stride, floor, and add one.

Inclusive labels, repeated records, and serial restarts describe different counting bases. A numeric span is not automatically the count of existing physical or bibliographic items.

Divide lastIssue minus firstIssue by positive stride, floor, and add one.

When to use this tool

Use Serial Issue Range Count when you need a catalog count under a declared endpoint or restart convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter firstIssue, lastIssue, stride. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read count, aligned. Inspect aligned before interpreting the associated values.

Divide lastIssue minus firstIssue by positive stride, floor, and add one. Set aligned when the final issue lies exactly on that progression.1

firstIssueFirst IssueRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
lastIssueLast IssueRequired. Safe integer.
strideStrideRequired. Safe integer; minimum 1.

Limitations and assumptions

  • The start is included and an unaligned end is not generated; issue existence is not checked.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Compare the computed count with the original serial or item record, including missing and unnumbered material.
