Description

Return the character at that position.

Catalog identifiers and labels follow local formatting conventions. Splitting or recognizing a token's shape preserves structure without establishing that its identifier or classification is valid.

Return the character at that position.

When to use this tool

Use MARC Fixed Field Single Position Extractor when you need one explicit catalog-label parsing or formatting step.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter field, position. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read character. Use the output convention below.

Require printable ASCII field text and a valid zero-based position. Return the character at that position.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The tool does not validate MARC field length or position-specific meaning; non-ASCII input is rejected.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the cataloging scheme and source record before assigning semantic meaning or a filing order.
