Description
Label a MARC field's supplied blank/unknown state.
Library records distinguish copies, serial issues, leaf counts, field-state labels and edition-specific rights notes. A leaf may have two potential sides without both being printed or numbered. Due-date and hold-renewal arithmetic uses supplied calendar conventions rather than determining lending terms or access rights.
Label a MARC field's supplied blank/unknown state.
When to use this tool
Use MARC Fixed Field Blank Unknown Token when you already have fieldId, recordedState and need to label a MARC field's supplied blank/unknown state.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter fieldId, recordedState. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read label. Use the output convention below.
Require fieldId nonempty and recordedState blank, unknown, not-applicable, fill or other; format ID [state].1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| fieldId | Field Id | Required. Text; minimum UTF-16 length 1; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
| recordedState | Recorded State | Required. Text; one of "blank", "unknown", "not-applicable", "fill", "other"; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| label | Display token for supplied fixed-field state, not a serialized or validated MARC record. | Required. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
{
"input": {
"fieldId": "F17",
"recordedState": "unknown"
},
"output": {
"label": "F17 [unknown]"
}
} Limitations and assumptions
- This records a state label without parsing MARC bytes or verifying field-specific encoding and semantics.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Check the catalogue, physical item, field definition and original rights or lending record for actual status. Use the relevant complete cataloguing or calendar rule when a source label or supplied date offset is insufficient.
