Edition Date Precision Code Tool

Inspect supplied date-field presence flags without inferring a missing date or edition identity.

Description

Choose precision by the most specific true flag: day, month, year, or unknown.

Catalog metadata can record language, date precision, and source identity independently of the underlying item's completeness or authenticity. Consistency flags should be interpreted alongside the original record.

Choose precision by the most specific true flag: day, month, year, or unknown.

When to use this tool

Use Edition Date Precision Code when you need a narrow catalog metadata consistency check.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter yearKnown, monthKnown, dayKnown. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read precision, consistent. Inspect consistent before interpreting the associated values.

Choose precision by the most specific true flag: day, month, year, or unknown. Separately check that day implies month and year, and month implies year.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Inconsistent flags still yield a precision label; no actual date or catalog code is validated.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Apply the relevant cataloging standard and inspect the original record for a complete assessment.
