TDFA Band Overlap

Calculate overlap between TDFA gain and a requested signal band.

Description

Band overlap measures the intersection of a gain interval and a requested signal interval.

Band overlap measures the intersection of a gain interval and a requested signal interval. Coverage divides overlap by the requested width.1

Calculate overlap between TDFA gain and a requested signal band.

When to use TDFA Band Overlap

Use this tool to calculate overlap between TDFA gain and a requested signal band.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use TDFA Band Overlap and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter gainMinimumNanometers, gainMaximumNanometers, signalMinimumNanometers, signalMaximumNanometers using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read overlapNanometers, signalCoveragePercent. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

gainMaximumNanometersTDFA gain maximum (nm)numberRequired
signalMinimumNanometersSignal minimum (nm)numberRequired
signalMaximumNanometersSignal maximum (nm)numberRequired

Enter finite ordered gain bounds, permitting equal gain endpoints, and strictly increasing signal bounds in nm. Return width and percentage.

overlap=max(0,min(upper bounds)−max(lower bounds)); coverage%=100 overlap/signalWidth

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Wavelength positivity and gain strength are not checked. Touching bands have zero overlap.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Volume-Bragg Bandpass Check: Check whether a signal lies inside a volume-Bragg grating passband. For a complementary task, use NOPA Bandwidth Overlap: Calculate spectral overlap between a NOPA seed and gain window.
