Power-Beaming Efficiency
Calculate end-to-end optical power-beaming efficiency and power loss.
Description
End-to-end power efficiency compares delivered optical power with electrical input.
End-to-end power efficiency compares delivered optical power with electrical input. Power loss is their signed difference.1
Calculate end-to-end optical power-beaming efficiency and power loss.
When to use Power-Beaming Efficiency
Use this tool to calculate end-to-end optical power-beaming efficiency and power loss.
Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
How to use Power-Beaming Efficiency and understand its results
- Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
- Enter electricalInputPowerWatts, deliveredOpticalPowerWatts using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read endToEndEfficiencyPercent, powerLossWatts. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| electricalInputPowerWatts | Electrical input power (W) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| deliveredOpticalPowerWatts | Delivered optical power (W) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
Enter positive electrical and nonnegative delivered watts. Return percentage and loss.
efficiency%=100delivered/electrical; loss=electrical−delivered Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| endToEndEfficiencyPercent | End-to-end efficiency (%) | number; minimum: 0 |
| powerLossWatts | Power loss (W) | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Delivered power is not constrained below input, so inconsistent measurements can yield >100% and negative loss. No link or converter model is inferred.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Free-Space Link Margin: Calculate a free-space optical link budget from caller-supplied gains, losses, and sensitivity. For a complementary task, use Fiber Delivery Power Margin: Check fiber-delivery intensity and nonlinear phase against supplied limits.
