Fiber Delivery Power Margin

Check fiber-delivery intensity and nonlinear phase against supplied limits.

Description

Fiber-delivery budgeting checks average core intensity and a constant-power nonlinear phase against supplied limits.

Fiber-delivery budgeting checks average core intensity and a constant-power nonlinear phase against supplied limits. Damage margin here is a limit-to-intensity ratio.1

Check fiber-delivery intensity and nonlinear phase against supplied limits.

When to use Fiber Delivery Power Margin

Use this tool to check fiber-delivery intensity and nonlinear phase against supplied limits.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use Fiber Delivery Power Margin and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter deliveredPowerWatts, coreAreaSquareMeters, damageIntensityWPerM2, nonlinearCoefficientPerWMeter, fiberLengthMeters, maximumBIntegralRadians using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read coreIntensityWPerM2, damageMargin, bIntegralRadians, withinBothLimits. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
deliveredPowerWattsDelivered peak power (W)number; minimum: 0Required
coreAreaSquareMetersFiber core area (m²)number; minimum: 0Required
damageIntensityWPerM2Damage intensity limit (W/m²)number; minimum: 0Required
nonlinearCoefficientPerWMeterNonlinear coefficient (1/(W·m))number; minimum: 0Required
fiberLengthMetersFiber length (m)number; minimum: 0Required
maximumBIntegralRadiansMaximum B-integral (rad)number; minimum: 0Required

Enter nonnegative power/coefficient/length/B limit and positive core area/damage limit. Return intensity, ratio margin, B and inclusive combined gate. Use positive power for finite margin.

intensity=P/area; margin=damageLimit/intensity; B=γPL

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Zero power gives infinite margin and fails the output contract. No mode profile, pulse peaks, material damage limit or loss evolution is derived.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Nonlinear Length: Calculate nonlinear length and accumulated self-phase modulation. For a complementary task, use LMA Fiber Mode Margin: Check large-mode-area fiber higher-order-mode suppression and fundamental transmission.
