PLIF Signal Normalization

Background-correct and normalize PLIF signal by sheet energy and collection gain.

Description

PLIF normalization subtracts background and divides by sheet energy and collection gain.

PLIF normalization subtracts background and divides by sheet energy and collection gain. The corrected signal may be negative.1

Background-correct and normalize PLIF signal by sheet energy and collection gain.

When to use PLIF Signal Normalization

Use this tool to background-correct and normalize PLIF signal by sheet energy and collection gain.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use PLIF Signal Normalization and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter measuredSignal, backgroundSignal, laserSheetEnergyMillijoules, collectionGain using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read backgroundCorrectedSignal, normalizedSignalPerMillijoule. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
measuredSignalMeasured PLIF signalnumber; minimum: 0Required
backgroundSignalBackground signalnumber; minimum: 0Required
laserSheetEnergyMillijoulesLaser-sheet energy (mJ)number; minimum: 0Required
collectionGainCollection gainnumber; minimum: 0Required

Enter nonnegative measured/background signals and positive energy and gain. Return corrected signal and normalized signal per mJ.

corrected=measured−background; normalized=corrected/(energy_mJ×gain)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No fluorescence saturation, absorption, quenching or concentration conversion is supplied.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use SRS Contrast: Calculate stimulated Raman loss contrast from pump-on and pump-off probe measurements. For a complementary task, use Fluorescence Upconversion: Gaussian-deconvolve gate width from a fluorescence-upconversion cross-correlation.
