Optogenetic Pulse Dose

Calculate pulsed optogenetic duty cycle, delivered energy, and radiant dose.

Description

Pulsed optical dose combines pulse-width duty cycle with an illumination power.

Pulsed optical dose combines pulse-width duty cycle with an illumination power. The implementation applies duty cycle to the field named averagePowerMilliwatts.1

Calculate pulsed optogenetic duty cycle, delivered energy, and radiant dose.

When to use Optogenetic Pulse Dose

Use this tool to calculate pulsed optogenetic duty cycle, delivered energy, and radiant dose.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use Optogenetic Pulse Dose and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter averagePowerMilliwatts, pulseWidthMilliseconds, pulseRateHertz, exposureSeconds, illuminatedAreaMm2 using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read dutyCycle, deliveredEnergyJoules, radiantDoseJPerCm2. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
averagePowerMilliwattsAverage optical power (mW)number; minimum: 0Required
pulseWidthMillisecondsPulse width (ms)number; minimum: 0Required
pulseRateHertzPulse rate (Hz)number; minimum: 0Required
exposureSecondsExposure duration (s)number; minimum: 0Required
illuminatedAreaMm2Illuminated area (mm²)number; minimum: 0Required

Enter nonnegative power, width, rate and exposure and positive area. Return duty, joules and J/cm². For this model, supply an on-pulse power basis; an already time-averaged power would be scaled twice.

duty=width_ms×rate/1000; energy=power_mW/1000×duty×time; dose=energy/(area_mm²/100)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

deliveredEnergyJoulesDelivered optical energy (J)number; minimum: 0
radiantDoseJPerCm2Radiant dose (J/cm²)number; minimum: 0

Limitations and assumptions

Duty is not capped at one. No opsin response, tissue attenuation, treatment efficacy or safety criterion is supplied.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Q-Switch Peak Power: Calculate triangular-pulse peak power and pulse-train average power. For a complementary task, use Photobiomodulation Dose: Calculate delivered energy and fluence for photobiomodulation.
