Kerr-Gate Suppression

Measure Kerr-gate background suppression, desired-signal transmission, and SNR improvement.

Description

Kerr-gate performance compares background suppression with desired-signal transmission.

Kerr-gate performance compares background suppression with desired-signal transmission. Their combined ratios quantify signal-to-background improvement.1

Measure Kerr-gate background suppression, desired-signal transmission, and SNR improvement.

When to use Kerr-Gate Suppression

Use this tool to measure Kerr-gate background suppression, desired-signal transmission, and SNR improvement.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use Kerr-Gate Suppression and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter ungatedBackground, gatedBackground, ungatedDesiredSignal, gatedDesiredSignal using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read backgroundSuppressionDb, signalTransmissionPercent, snrImprovementFactor. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
ungatedBackgroundUngated background signalnumber; minimum: 0Required
gatedBackgroundKerr-gated background signalnumber; minimum: 0Required
ungatedDesiredSignalUngated desired signalnumber; minimum: 0Required
gatedDesiredSignalKerr-gated desired signalnumber; minimum: 0Required

Enter positive background and ungated desired signals with nonnegative gated desired signal. Return dB, transmission and improvement.

suppressionDb=10log10(Bungated/Bgated); transmission%=100Sgated/Sungated; improvement=(Sgated/Bgated)/(Sungated/Bungated)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

This ratio uses signal/background, not a measured noise standard deviation. No gate dynamics or noise statistics are modeled.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Plasma-Mirror Contrast: Calculate plasma-mirror pulse-contrast improvement from differential reflectivity. For a complementary task, use SRS Contrast: Calculate stimulated Raman loss contrast from pump-on and pump-off probe measurements.
