Eyewear OD–Visibility Score
Score supplied laser-eyewear optical-density adequacy while retaining visible-light transmission.
Description
Eyewear scoring compares supplied optical density with a required density and retains visible-light transmission as a visibility measure.
Eyewear scoring compares supplied optical density with a required density and retains visible-light transmission as a visibility measure. The combined score is a custom arithmetic heuristic.1
Score supplied laser-eyewear optical-density adequacy while retaining visible-light transmission.
When to use Eyewear OD–Visibility Score
Use this tool to score supplied laser-eyewear optical-density adequacy while retaining visible-light transmission.
Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
How to use Eyewear OD–Visibility Score and understand its results
- Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
- Enter eyewearOpticalDensity, requiredOpticalDensity, visibleLightTransmissionPercent using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read opticalDensityMargin, hazardTransmissionFraction, protectionVisibilityScore, meetsRequiredDensity. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| eyewearOpticalDensity | Eyewear optical density | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| requiredOpticalDensity | Required optical density | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| visibleLightTransmissionPercent | Visible-light transmission (%) | number; minimum: 0; maximum: 100 | Required |
Enter nonnegative densities and VLT 0–100%. Return margin, hazard transmission, score and inclusive density gate.
margin=eyewearOD−requiredOD; hazardTransmission=10^(−OD); score=VLTpercent/(1+max(0,−margin)) Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| opticalDensityMargin | Optical-density margin | number |
| hazardTransmissionFraction | Hazard transmission fraction | number; minimum: 0; maximum: 1 |
| protectionVisibilityScore | Protection/visibility score | number; minimum: 0; maximum: 100 |
| meetsRequiredDensity | Meets required density | boolean |

No wavelength/pulse certification, eyewear condition, fit or safety standard is evaluated. The score is not a standardized protection rating.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Required Optical Density: Calculate required optical density from unprotected and permissible exposure values in matching units. For a complementary task, use Laser Safety Audit: Compare required laser-safety controls with documented controls.
