Terrace Step Cutfill Cross Section Tool

Signed trapezoid cut/fill area and volume; positive heights denote cut and negative heights fill, without separating a zero crossing.

Description

Multiply width by the mean of signed leftHeight and rightHeight for signedArea, then multiply by length for signedVolume.

Simple site geometry approximates an area, section, or volume using ideal shapes. Coherent length units and the distinction between signed and unsigned quantities determine the result's meaning.

Multiply width by the mean of signed leftHeight and rightHeight for signedArea, then multiply by length for signedVolume.

When to use this tool

Use Terrace Step Cutfill Cross Section when you need one transparent landscape geometry component.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter width, leftHeight, rightHeight, length. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read signedArea, signedVolume. Use the output convention below.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use coherent length units; opposite-sign cut and fill can cancel, so this is not separate excavation and fill quantities.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a surveyed terrain or construction model when irregular shapes, settlement, drainage, and structural performance matter.
