Planter Free Drainage Layer Volume

Calculate explicit uniform drainage-layer gross and void volumes without predicting drainage performance.

Loading tool…

Description

Calculate gross and void volume of a supplied drainage layer.

Landscape geometry distinguishes plan area, depth, void fraction, grade, center spacing and nominal clearances. A horizontal-per-vertical slope is the inverse orientation of rise/run, and post counts differ from bay counts. Supplied geometric terms do not establish stability, drainage, accessibility or safe construction.

Calculate gross and void volume of a supplied drainage layer.

When to use this tool

Use Planter Free Drainage Layer Volume when you already have planArea, layerDepth, suppliedVoidFraction and need to calculate gross and void volume of a supplied drainage layer.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter planArea, layerDepth, suppliedVoidFraction. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read grossLayerVolume, voidVolume. Use the output convention below.

Require area/depth>=0 and void fraction in [0,1]; gross=area*depth, void=gross*fraction.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
planAreaPlan AreaRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
layerDepthLayer DepthRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
suppliedVoidFractionSupplied Void FractionRequired. Finite number; minimum 0; maximum 1.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
grossLayerVolumeGross Layer VolumeRequired. Finite number.
voidVolumeplanArea*layerDepth*suppliedVoidFraction; geometric void volume, not necessarily plant-available water.Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use matching length/area units; nominal void volume is not available water storage, infiltration capacity or verified drainage performance.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a verified site survey and complete dimensioned layout for a landscape design. Include material behavior, drainage, ground conditions and the applicable requirements when local volumes, grades or spacing calculations cannot answer the full question.
