Path Longitudinal Cross Grade Pair

Calculate explicit signed longitudinal and cross grades from separate rise-run pairs without evaluating accessibility or drainage standards.

Description

Calculate supplied longitudinal and cross grades as signed rise/run ratios.

Landscape geometry distinguishes plan area, depth, void fraction, grade, center spacing and nominal clearances. A horizontal-per-vertical slope is the inverse orientation of rise/run, and post counts differ from bay counts. Supplied geometric terms do not establish stability, drainage, accessibility or safe construction.

Calculate supplied longitudinal and cross grades as signed rise/run ratios.

When to use this tool

Use Path Longitudinal Cross Grade Pair when you already have longitudinalRise, longitudinalRun, crossRise, crossRun and need to calculate supplied longitudinal and cross grades as signed rise/run ratios.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter longitudinalRise, longitudinalRun, crossRise, crossRun. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read longitudinalGrade, crossGrade. Use the output convention below.

Require both runs>0; divide each signed rise by its matching run.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Outputs are dimensionless ratios, not percentage numbers; no terrain survey, accessible-path rule or safe drainage grade is selected.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a verified site survey and complete dimensioned layout for a landscape design. Include material behavior, drainage, ground conditions and the applicable requirements when local volumes, grades or spacing calculations cannot answer the full question.
