Tease Length
Check tease copy against character and spoken-runtime limits.
Description
A tease must often satisfy both a text-length budget and a spoken-duration budget.
A tease must often satisfy both a text-length budget and a spoken-duration budget. Estimated duration uses a supplied reading speed.1
Check tease copy against character and spoken-runtime limits.
When to use Tease Length
Use this tool to check tease copy against character and spoken-runtime limits.
Prepare the text, recorded observations, aligned figures or editorial criteria requested. Confirm what each label, count, timestamp or supplied flag represents before interpreting the result.
How to use Tease Length and understand its results
- Prepare the text, recorded observations, aligned figures or editorial criteria requested. Confirm what each label, count, timestamp or supplied flag represents before interpreting the result.
- Enter teaseCopy, maximumCharacters, wordsPerMinute, maximumSeconds using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read characterCount, wordCount, estimatedSeconds, fits. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| teaseCopy | Tease copy | string | Required |
| maximumCharacters | Maximum characters | integer; minimum: 1 | Required |
| wordsPerMinute | Estimated delivery speed (words/min) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| maximumSeconds | Maximum delivery time (s) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
Enter text, positive words/minute, positive integer character maximum and nonnegative time maximum. Count Unicode code points, including whitespace; count words after trimming and splitting on whitespace. Return counts, seconds and inclusive gate.
seconds=60×wordCount/wordsPerMinute; fits=characters≤maximum AND seconds≤maximum Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| characterCount | Character count | integer; minimum: 0 |
| wordCount | Word count | integer; minimum: 0 |
| estimatedSeconds | Estimated delivery time (s) | number; minimum: 0 |
| fits | Fits character and runtime limits | boolean |

} Limitations and assumptions
No speech synthesis or natural pauses are modeled. Character counts are not grapheme clusters or visual width.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Extremely large text inputs are rejected. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Lower-Third Fit: Check lower-third line and total character limits. For a complementary task, use Package Runtime: Total broadcast package elements against a runtime limit.
