Lower-Third Fit
Check lower-third line and total character limits.
Description
Lower-third text budgets can apply per line and to both lines together.
Lower-third text budgets can apply per line and to both lines together. This check measures text length without rendering a graphic.1
Check lower-third line and total character limits.
When to use Lower-Third Fit
Use this tool to check lower-third line and total character limits.
Prepare the text, recorded observations, aligned figures or editorial criteria requested. Confirm what each label, count, timestamp or supplied flag represents before interpreting the result.
How to use Lower-Third Fit and understand its results
- Prepare the text, recorded observations, aligned figures or editorial criteria requested. Confirm what each label, count, timestamp or supplied flag represents before interpreting the result.
- Enter firstLine, secondLine, maximumCharactersPerLine, maximumTotalCharacters using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read firstLineCharacters, secondLineCharacters, totalCharacters, fits. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| firstLine | First lower-third line | string | Required |
| secondLine | Second lower-third line | string | Required |
| maximumCharactersPerLine | Maximum characters per line | integer; minimum: 1 | Required |
| maximumTotalCharacters | Maximum total characters | integer; minimum: 1 | Required |
Enter two strings and nonnegative integer limits. Count Unicode code points including whitespace, return each count, total and inclusive gate.
fits=eachLine≤lineMaximum AND total≤totalMaximum Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| firstLineCharacters | First-line characters | integer; minimum: 0 |
| secondLineCharacters | Second-line characters | integer; minimum: 0 |
| totalCharacters | Total characters | integer; minimum: 0 |
| fits | Fits supplied limits | boolean |

} Limitations and assumptions
Counts are not grapheme clusters, pixel widths or safe-area measurements. No wrapping, font or layout is modeled.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Extremely large text inputs are rejected. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Tease Length: Check tease copy against character and spoken-runtime limits. For a complementary task, use Palette Contrast: Calculate color contrast and compare it with a supplied minimum.
