Per-Capita Rate

Calculate a scaled per-capita rate and people-per-event ratio.

Description

A per-capita rate scales an event count by population.

A per-capita rate scales an event count by population. The caller chooses the reporting base, such as events per a specified population unit.1

Calculate a scaled per-capita rate and people-per-event ratio.

When to use Per-Capita Rate

Use this tool to calculate a scaled per-capita rate and people-per-event ratio.

Prepare the text, recorded observations, aligned figures or editorial criteria requested. Confirm what each label, count, timestamp or supplied flag represents before interpreting the result.

How to use Per-Capita Rate and understand its results

  1. Prepare the text, recorded observations, aligned figures or editorial criteria requested. Confirm what each label, count, timestamp or supplied flag represents before interpreting the result.
  2. Enter eventCount, population, scale using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read perCapitaRate, oneEventPerPeople. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
eventCountEvent countnumber; minimum: 0Required
populationPopulation denominatornumber; minimum: 0Required
scalePer-capita scalenumber; minimum: 0Required

Enter strictly positive count, population and scale, including fractional values. Return the scaled rate and population/events as the one-event-per-people measure. Zero events are rejected by calculation rules even though the field schema permits zero.

rate=events/population×scale

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No population denominator, time period or statistical uncertainty is validated.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Rate-Term Selector: Select incidence or prevalence terminology and calculate the supplied rate. For a complementary task, use Election Reporting Coverage: Audit election-reporting topic and source-count coverage.
