Box Score Reconciliation

Reconcile period-level scoring with a published team total.

Description

Box-score reconciliation compares a sum of period scores with the published result.

Box-score reconciliation compares a sum of period scores with the published result. A tolerance controls numerical agreement.1

Reconcile period-level scoring with a published team total.

When to use Box Score Reconciliation

Use this tool to reconcile period-level scoring with a published team total.

Prepare the text, recorded observations, aligned figures or editorial criteria requested. Confirm what each label, count, timestamp or supplied flag represents before interpreting the result.

How to use Box Score Reconciliation and understand its results

  1. Prepare the text, recorded observations, aligned figures or editorial criteria requested. Confirm what each label, count, timestamp or supplied flag represents before interpreting the result.
  2. Enter periodScores, publishedTeamTotal, tolerance using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read computedTeamTotal, difference, reconciles. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

publishedTeamTotalPublished team totalnumberRequired
toleranceAllowed differencenumber; minimum: 0Required

Enter nonnegative finite period values, a finite published total and nonnegative tolerance. Empty periods sum to zero and fractional scores are accepted. Return total, signed difference and inclusive gate.

difference=ΣperiodScores−publishedTotal; matches=|difference|≤tolerance

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No game data or integer scoring rules are checked.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Table Total Check: Sum supplied table rows and compare the result with a published total. For a complementary task, use Play-by-Play Code Count: Count selected play-by-play codes and identify absent tracked codes.
